Butterfly Bush...'Black Knight'

This Buddleia davidii has deep purple panicles that appear from early Summer until late Fall. It attracts, you guessed it, butterflies! This cultivar can grow rather large up to 12 feet and up to 6 feet in width. This one is located in partial shade and requires an occasional pruning to shape it. The leaves are narrow and not very attractive but the fragrance is it's real appeal.

I have found out by experience that after a few years the root system can be extensive. Moving an established butterfly bush will require hard labor and I suggest using an axe to trim the roots. On the brightside, you may be suprised to know that off shoots may be produced by the remaining root system.
