View From the Hillside...

Author: jess35 /

Hillside

This shot doesn't depict the true nature of the "Hillside" as is rolls gently down into a valley of sorts and then levels off into pasture. It's grade is pretty steep and here I am standing at what I would call the midpoint of the hill looking diagonally across it. At the bottom of the hill is a man-made pond built in the 50's to use as irrigation for tobacco. The Hillside is terribly rocky and somewhat hard to traverse, making it really great for late afternoon walks to get the ole heart pumping.

The Hillside has a rich historic past of which can really be left only to one's imagination. I've often wondered who had previously owned these lands and what kind of life they must have lived. My grandparents knowledge goes back a few generations to the late 1800's. Before that time is a mystery, but I can tell you we have found signs of old wagon trails, broken pieces of pottery, and we even have a pretty good collection of arrowheads. I guess that is a good indication that Indians once inhabited the land. I am not sure what time period that would place us in but it would be interesting to know, presumably before 1700. I guess it will take a little digging to find out (no pun intended) that kind of information.

Here are a couple of images of an arrowhead that was found on the Hillside:

Wow, this post is long overdue! I've been on a two week long hiatus, filled with family, lots of delicious food, and tons of shopping. Hope everyone is well, and staying busy. Don't know if any of you bloggers have tried Google Docs & Spreadsheets, I would suggest trying it out. I mentioned adding a table with image information and was going to add it to the HTML Template but I am going to post it using Google Docs. I've tested it and things went pretty smoothly. I am in the process of tweaking it and will add it later this week if everything goes as planned.

I Sing Because I Am Happy...

Author: jess35 /

A couple of posts ago I introduced you to my 78 year old grandma. Well, here she is at her best! I must admit to egging her on a little, she didn't want to sing for me at first and when I brought out my camera she was a little tickled but I assured her that it was just fine. Hope you like it!

Illuminating

Took a walk this morning and low and behold I came upon a grove of trees with the sun directly behind (at about 11 o'clock) illuminating them like a fire in the sky. I stood there a moment to take it all in then decided the best way to take a few snaps. I whipped out my Kodak EasyShare Z730 digital camera and easily captured a few close-ups. As soon as had time I edited a few and this is the end result. What a great day this has been! Don't know if anyone has noticed but I have decided to stop giving information about the image. I am working on incorporating a table into the template with that information so it may be a while before it appears again.

New Day Dawning...

Thanks to all of you who voted yesterday!

My family has always been interested and somewhat active in politics so it was no surprise when my 78 year old grandmother stayed up until 1am trying to find out the latest scoop from CNN. She has served our local Democratic Party for several years in various roles but with age and infirmity creeping in she now is content to just sit on the sidelines. She has seen some amazing things in her time and it is nice to listen to all of her wonderful stories. In fact, yesterday she was telling me that after WWII, the War Office sent men around to the poorer communities to build outhouses. I bet that was a nice surprise to find in your backyard! :) Oh, well think I'll run now.

Once again, I have been tweaking my blog and have added a few extras that may give you more of an insight on my personality. If you know me, you would understand that I am not about trashing people but, humor is the spice of life so I didn't think twice about adding the "Bushisms" gadget, enjoy!

Please, VOTE on Tuesday, November 7th!

Fall Reflections...

Author: jess35 / Labels:

Fall Reflections This time of year brings a lot of excitement, Fall's arrival, the upcoming holidays, visiting with family, and communing with nature are all on my list of things to do. So this past weekend, when I ventured out to see how the leaves were progressing I was pleasantly surprised to find how pretty they actually were. Over the course of 3 days I shot 300+ images and curiously that amount was not enough. I suppose, with many outings like that I will have to look into investing in some type of storage for my photos but that is down the road. I have thought about purchasing an external hard drive or a flash memory device because they are so inexpensive these days.

You might be surprised at how little time it takes to shoot 300 images, less than 2 hours, that is the great thing about using a digital camera, as you know, no time is spent loading and unloading film. So when my travels drew me to one of my favorite destinations I found it rather easy to keep pushing the button.

In all actuality this image did not leave an impression on me until I started editing. The muted colors are so soft while the hanging branch above just jumps out at you. I have been looking for a shot like this and have seen other photobloggers post them so I was enthralled to have one of my very own. I did however enhance the saturation and cropped it slightly to maximize the reflective element. Now I am off to edit more photos and will post more Fall scenes later.

I have been tinkering again, and today I have added a new link button to the sidebar and if you haven't noticed, it's a simple "Button Flip." When you roll the mouse over the Martha Stewart Button you will see the color change to orange, pretty festive, huh? At least I thought it was! I was able to do this with a little help from HTML Goodies and some JavaScript code.

With Halloween closing in, I thought this image would fit in nicely. I enjoy decorating for the holidays, in fact, I just bought a 3.99 Pumpkin, which Ithought was a great price for it's size. I grow my own, and have done so forthe past 3-4 seasons. This year's crop was disappointing as I only had a few that did not succumb to rotting. I planted my crop a little too late (June)and probably could have thinned them a little better but that is what I love about growing my own. I digress, as this image is not of a Pumpkin, I will post one later.

Yesterday, I added a ckickable link button for Google News in the sidebar. I found this neat little trick at HTML Goodies and can be added fairly easy. Give it a try. One note though, the sidebar button was not rendered in Firefox. Click on the button below for more information about link buttons.
